25 Short Layered Bob Haircuts For Women Over 40 That Flatter Every Face Shape

24 Short Layered Bob Haircuts For Women Over 40 That Flatter Every Face Shape

Read through these captions and the same four elements keep appearing. Crown volume. Root shadow. Feathered or stacked ends. A soft fringe. That combination is effectively the specification for a modern short bob, and you can ask for all four by name.

Each does a specific job. Crown volume lifts the silhouette and stops the cut sitting flat. Root shadow removes the regrowth line and adds depth where the hair meets the scalp. Feathered ends keep the perimeter soft so it ages gracefully rather than growing out of shape. And a fringe frames the face, with micro and wispy versions costing almost no density.

Requested together they produce the cuts in these photographs. Requested individually they each improve a bob. What produces something ordinary is asking for a short layered bob and leaving the rest to chance.

Twenty-four short layered bobs are gathered below in brunette, chestnut, copper, butter blonde, strawberry, caramel and auburn tones, stacked, feathered, tousled and lived-in, with micro fringes, see-through fringes and side sweeps. Four elements. Name them all.

This Brunette Bob with the Tiny Bangs and All That Crown Volume

The first thing to comment on is how nice the style is, I would say this is a good case of the bangs not having to be super bold or very good, and the micro bangs here look great and elevate the whole style. They aren’t too overbearing in not being too loud about having bangs, and the crown lift? That is all achieved through some internal graduation and smart point cutting at the nape. If you happen to have a little cowlick situation up top like this, then that stacked layered work actually helps utilize it instead of fighting it. You do have to be prepared to do a round brush blowout most days, and a little lightweight paste to train the bangs, so if you prefer a strictly wash and go routine, it may be better to keep on scrolling. But if you have about five extra minutes a day, this look is going to be a lot of fun.

That Chestnut Curtain Part Situation with the Root Shadow

When looking this cut from the outside, it appears effortless, but trust me a lot of thought went into this haircut than meets the eye. The crown is internally graduated to lift the face without rounding it (I think you get what I mean?). There’s some subtle asymmetry here too: one side flips under a bit more than the other. That detail shifts the whole cut from “mom bob” (no offense!) to ‘modern’. If the greys are coming through, you’re going to love the low root smudge technique because it creates a super natural blur. Just one problem: it has to be executed by a good stylist who’s layering or else this is definitely not an “any salon will do” haircut.

This Copper Stacked Situation with Those Little Face Framing Pieces

I want to take a moment to appreciate this copper color because it adds warmth without having the color scream “I just colored my hair RED!” which I think is the sweet spot a lot of my clients are looking for. The stacked nape graduation is what creates all of that fullness. So if your hair tends to just hang there and do nothing, that is the type of structure this cut will give you. The micro face-frame layers soften everything, and I will be honest, you need to blow dry this into shape pretty much every day to keep that rounded look. It’s not going to air dry this way. Everything else is surprisingly low maintenance, and the color creates a rounded silhouette that is low maintenance. Also, the root shadow and point cut ends give you built-in grow out time.

Butterblonde with Feathered Ends and That Effortless Fringe

It is one of those cuts that as soon as the client walks in, everyone in the salon stops and turns. With the ends being so feathered, this is going to feel really nice and breezy. The bangs are so soft that it’ll look like you won’t even have bangs, it’ll be like, “oh this? They just kinda do that.” With these types of cuts, the internal layers give you that crown lift without the need to tease it, and I think we’ve all been there so we don’t need to do that again. If you have fine hair, I suggest a root lift spray to keep the volume in your hair so you don’t look flat by noon, especially if you don’t want to look flat by noon. Also, these bangs will need to be trimmed every 3-4 weeks… I don’t make the rules, but that’s the deal with bangs. The soft babylights and that root shadow will make you look just like you came back from a sunny vacation.

Strawberry Blonde with That Wispy Fringe Energy

This one has an awesome color! Personally, I would say this shade is the ideal combination of blonde and strawberry, and captures the light beautifully from any angle. The brow-grazing wispy fringe is the best!! It’s super floaty so you’ll be able to see through it, and it really helps to frame the face. There’s some internal graduation around the nape which creates useful volume while the point cut ends stop it from looking too heavy and boxy. If you’ve got a little crown cowlick, you’ll just need to do some super low heat styling to keep it from doing its own thing. Honestly, this will only take about two minutes with a small round brush. Just so you know going in, the strawberry tone will need some maintenance to keep it from drifting into brassy territory.

Chestnut Feathered Bob with the See-Through Micro Fringe

I really like see-through fringes because they provide a bang feeling while not being too committed, and this is a perfect case. The point cutting on the ends gives a nice airy feeling while also providing the illusion that your hair does super cool things on its own. The crown lift is great, and cheekbone framing is great, it all works. Where I would give you an honest truth is if your hair is VERY fine and low density, this specific cut can begin to appear slightly sparse at the ends, in which case I would recommend some subtle lowlights to give the appearance of fullness. But if your hair has medium density, this is one of those incredible “walk out of the salon feeling fantastic” types of haircuts.

Copper Tousled Bob with That Face Softening Fringe

We can’t beat these stylistic qualities! It’s finish is just fluffy enough to look effortless, and an eye-skimming fringe is just what we need to open up the face. The crown layers add just the right amount of height for that extra bounce! The shadow/root adds dimension to the color, which is so much better than looking flat and one-dimensional. The effortless look is a bit high maintenance, and There’s some work needed to achieve this. Daily use of a texturizing spray (with grit) is a must, plus hot tools if that’s your thing. Regular glossing is essential to avoid the sad faded looks, so with these colors, it’s definitely the highest maintenance option!

Caramel Laced Bob with That Gorgeous Side Sweep

Elegant side sweeping fringes serve to make this style stand out. The cut graduation at the neck is clear, whilst the long layers that frame the face perform the softening. Winning point cuts at the ends are unclunky and light as well as keeping the perimeter from appearing too heavy.

It all just flows together. Low lights in caramel are soft and natural, plus some clear glazing is beneficial to maintain the level of shine.

They also add depth without being too bold. About the texture, it is worth mentioning that this graduation can pucker in coarse and thick hair, and that is something to talk with your stylist about prior to committing. But it scalp o for fine to medium hair? It’s stunning!

Lived-In Auburn with Feathered Fringe and Stacked Layers

“Lived in” is spot on for this VIbe. The way the hair falls looks like it takes SKILL to cut. I really like the contrast from the feathered fringe to the stacked nape layers. If you have natural waves, this style will be meant to work with them. The color is beautiful, I need you to know though that Vivid auburn is one of the three most high-maintenance colors. You will need to refresh that to keep it from going muddy. On this texture, the frizz limiting different layering approach will be a joy.

Sun-Kissed Layered Bob with That Rooted Warmth

The way the color is placed is nice, and the root shadow with warm babylights paired with depth really brings the shadows to life, especially around the cheekbones. I appreciate that. The longer face-framing layers with the stacked nape create more lift at the crown and soften the jawline which I’m always trying to do for my clients. The point cut ends create movement in the hair and minimize the triangle shape bobs tend to get. The styling might lead to some frustration for air-dry-only people, but the beautiful colors that go with the look make it low maintenance, and the grow out is intended.

Fiery Copper Bob with Feathered Fringe

If your eyes are blue and you have freckles and you’re NOT doing a copper tone, why not? Just look at it! This color lights up her face like nothing else. The micro-graduated nape with slice and point cut layers gives you all that lift and airiness without the hair looking thin, which is the balance everyone wants. The flyaway fringe is the perfect frame for her eyes. All I can say is that razor and point cut edges look great but they are super tricky, so make sure your stylist is dry cutting the ends. And with copper this bright? Be prepared to use color-safe products because it will wash out faster than you’d believe.

Soft Beige Bob with Curtain Bangs and That Gorgeous Roundness

The thing that stands out most is the shape of the cut. Rounded shapes always look polished and smart without being too stiff or ‘done’. That’s something internal graduation and feathering achieve. Bangs always soften the brow area and the neutral beige tones with lowlights make the hair appear very natural, and that is exactly how you want it to look. I would say cuts like this are the most common to receive compliments, and to be told ‘your hair looks so good’, and that is because it always looks good. This is ideal for fine to medium straight hair. If you have thick curly hair, this shape is going to fight you. It does need at least some light styling cream to keep everything looking super messy and casual.

Caramel Balayage Bob with the Root Melt and Curtain Framing

This color must look AMAZING in person. Sunlit caramel balayage creates a soft rooted melt gradient, and makes it appear as if you just came back from a luxury vacation. Face framing curtain bangs really brighten up the whole look. Short interior layers and point cut ends create a bit of lift in the crown area without it looking too choppy. There is a slight side asymmetry that brings everything together and adds a nice contemporary touch. To achieve this amount of movement you’re going to want a good texturizing product, and be selective with who you let cut your hair as you’ll want someone skilled to achieve this level of precision in the asymmetry. This hairstyle is definitely an “I feel like myself but better” kind of look.

Choppy Chestnut Bob with That Eyebrow Skimming Fringe

This haircut involves a lot of excitement on my side because the combination of choppy texture and a brow-skimming fringe creates a lot of personality. The point cutting and soft razor techniques create this effortless look that is so cool. The discreet micro-graduation at the nape is giving you some lift you didn’t even know you had. If you have some natural wave to your hair, this cut will play beautifully with that. In order to emphasize the separation in the ends, using a styling paste is a must, while a gloss treatment will be required to keep the chestnut color looking rich and dimensional rather than flat.

Root Faded Chin Bob with Center Parted Wispy Fringe

Let’s take a second to appreciate the little crown whorl over here. Most stylists will try to fight that and make it go away, but the best approach is to CUT INTO it and let it do its own thing to create some natural separation and movement, like in the example. The nice soft outward flick is due to a little point cutting and some light razoring on the ends. The wispy center-parted fringe is soft and delicate, but in a good way. The root shadow with some face framing micro balayage keeps the contrast low so grow out is not a pain. The thin fringe will need some styling product so it doesn’t all stick together, and if your hair is very straight those ends might drop by the end of the day. Nevertheless, this will look gorgeous on hair with even the slightest natural movement.

Chestnut Curtain Fringe Bob with Painted Balayage

It is so cute that the front piece is longer and tucks behind the ear! It accentuates the cheekbone and gives the whole haircut that intentional and slightly asymmetric vibe! And I really appreciate the work that went into the curtain fringe and those special long layers. What a great elevation and flow! The pointed cut ends are soft and give the impression of less weight. Everything feels lovely and not heavy. The natural root shadow with painted balayage is so brilliant! The incorporated dimension is great and easy to maintain. With that said, it doesn’t require a salon visit every four weeks which is a blessing. You are a lucky one with the texturizing because otherwise, you’d have a heavy outer line that weighs down the whole cut. You need to bring a picture, and not just any picture, but the right picture to your stylist.

Root Soft Blonde Graduated Bob with That S-Shaped Frame

I love how this graduated bob gets shaped with an S and that the long side sweep creates positive face framing! The way inner stacking and point cutting ends create that volume around the crown so that you don’t have to tease or backcomb is fantastic. The blend on the silver hairs with root smudge and babylights is absolutely phenomenal; you manage that beautifully. To keep this shape, some daily styling and a round brush will be necessary. Without the soft lowlights it would get brassy really quickly, and with your warm lowlights this may be a random comment but the light peach embroidery on her denim is actually helping me to see the true tone of the hair in this daylight shot, how funny is that?

Rounded Chocolate Bob with the Deep Side Sweep

A rounded bob with a deep side-sweep is ultra polished. It gives the impression you have your life together (and I mean that as a compliment). The internal graduation with stacked layers offers a smooth crown lift and the magic of illusion gives double the amount of hair without bulk. That subtle face-framing balayage will catch the light perfectly and it will be stunning. Daily styling will be needed to maintain that rounded shape whether it’s a round brush blowout, and at a minimum, a little styling cream and some intention. This cut is not suited for people who have very tight curls as that shape won’t translate well. The babylights at the part will also require root blending for seamless looks.

Platinum Side Swept Bob with Interior Stacking

I believe that platinum hair paired with a bob style is truly a winning combination. It’s so mesmerizing how this hair length in this specific color captures the light. This deep side part and the extended side sweep really do frame your face beautifully. Those internally stacked layers add volume so that fine hair doesn’t tend to fall flat at the ends. The little root shadow at the part serves two purposes: concealing any regrowth and creating depth so that the platinum color doesn’t appear too flat. To maintain this look, you’ll definitely need some round brush styling, or at the very least a root lift product to maintain the volume. Very coarse curly hair will have a completely different experience with this cut. The grow out is actually quite decent with the root shadow.

Rooted Sunlit Bob with the Curtain Part

This is like the hair version of an amazing white t-shirt. It looks simple but everything is working. The soft curtain fringes with a graduation at the crown, and pointcut ends, create a movable texture that catches the light beautifully. The root smudge plus babylights is d brilliant because it creates low maintenance, low contrast color that grows out on its own schedule, which is ideal for those of us who keep pushing our appointments. Hair of that fine to medium waviness is going to feel a lot more like this is going to feel very natural on. But I want to set some expectations here, you’re going to need daily styling and some heat to shape those waves because they won’t hold on their own and if your hair is coarse and tightly curled, this cut is a different story.

Airy Chestnut Bob with That Brow Grazing Feathered Fringe

What I really love about this cut is the MOVEMENT. Each section moves in a different direction, and is successful in this layering. The texturing on the crown with point cut ends creates lift from the flip and adds personality to the whole look. The faint root shadow and micro balayage at the temples is a smart color placement that brightens the eyes. To keep the styling of this flip, you’ll need heat. Whether you use a round brush or a diffuser will depend on your natural texture. An occasional clear gloss will shine the color and prevent it from looking dull. This fringe and chin length style is particularly flattering to oval faces.

Jet Black Razor Textured Bob with Micro Fringe

I find jet black hair on a sharp bob particularly striking. Especially with a micro fringe. It offers a sharp border that help draw attention to the eyes. The combination of razor texture and point cutting on the internal layers give the cut an edge, literally. Center cowlicks are regarded as a nuisance, but they work to your advantage by giving crown volume at no cost. The natural root lift is a bonus. The amazing texture from the razor work means the hair will look fuller and more dynamic than blunt cuts, and will help the hair move. It will be agile. Jet black hair is a big commitment when it comes to hair color, and I say it to all my clients, regrowth shows faster and more obviously than any other color, meaning you will be coming in for color touch-ups a lot. To avoid your hair going flat by lunchtime, you will have to use a root lift product daily. With fine to medium hair, it will go flat by lunchtime. Don’t worry.

Platinum Angled Stacked Bob with the Long Side Sweep

I enjoy seeing bob hairstyles cut at an angle, such as this stacked bob in platinum. I think, with this kind of cut, you have to be confident and really know yourself, and I absolutely love it! This style has great graduated layers and the ends are cut with a razor finish which means it’ll have great movement and volume. This style will make your hair come alive instead of just sitting there. The ends being slightly turned under gives a polished look to the haircut as well. I think the long bangs that are swept to one side really help to highlight the features of the face and the subtle darker shadow at the roots stops the haircut from looking too overdone. With this hair color, it can easily look like a wig, so be careful. A cut like this will most definitely require a lot of maintenance including round brushing it each day and keeping the ends freshly toned, but it’s definitely worth it! The shape of this haircut is so stunning and satisfying that all the work is completely justified!

Choppy Layered Bob with Curtain Bangs and That Effortless Texture

I can’t say it enough, curtain bangs are great, especially with the right cut. It makes everything come together, and this photo shows it all. With point cutting and some soft razor techniques, this bob gives a really airy, effortless vibe, and you’ll definitely be trying a little harder than just the cut. The natural wave is great because the cut adds a lot of texture and movement so it’s one less thing to worry about if you tend to create a lot of volume with heat and styling products. The root shadow caramel gloss is such a smart color choice because it softens the face and puts less stress on maintenance, meaning less upkeep. Make sure to grab setting spray if your hair is fine because you’ll need it. If you have a strong cowlick, be sure to discuss the part with your stylist because it WILL affect how the bangs fall.
